New Parking Lot
- Continuing excavation and hauling of existing material off site
- Commencing excavation and formwork for the upper retaining wall footings
- Continuing installation of storm water pipe and manholes
- Placing reinforcing and backfill material for the lower retaining wall
Note: A temporary pedestrian detour trail is open to pedestrians for access around the new parking lot during construction.
West Parking Lot North Side:
- The first row of parking spaces is closed to facilitate construction of the new lot.
- Construction on this parking lot is anticipated starting June 2008
West Parking Lot South Side:
- Work is anticipated starting June 2008
Route 235 Intersection:
- Work is anticipated starting July 2008
Mount Vernon Circle
- Work is anticipated starting August 2008
East Parking Lot North Side:
- Work is anticipated starting August 2008
East Parking Lot South Side:
- Work is anticipated starting September 2008
Multi-use Trail:

General Traffic Details / Affects to Public:
The George Washington Memorial Parkway and Mount Vernon Circle will remain open at all times. No construction activities will occur during rush hours from 5:00 am to 9:30am and from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The Fairfax County trail through the picnic area at the west lot will be closed during construction, but pedestrian access will be maintained for all other trails. Portions of the parking areas will be closed for construction.
General Project Description
The National Park Service, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration - Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, has started construction on a variety of pedestrian and vehicular traffic improvements in the vicinity of Mount Vernon. The project consists of constructing a new overflow parking area at the west parking lot of Mount Vernon; reconfiguring the Mount Vernon Circle to improve traffic flow; extending the Mount Vernon Trail to connect with the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail; and milling and overlaying the existing parking lots at Mount Vernon.
Construction began in March 2008, and is expected to be complete by October 2008.
