Work for the Week of May 11 to May 17, 2008
Southbound Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway:
- Placing pavement striping on the completed surface of the roadway
Northbound Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway:
- Completing the concrete road base repair work in the left lane between Virginia Avenue and the P Street overpass.
- Completing paving the roadway in the left lane between Virginia Avenue and the P Street overpass.
‘P’ Street Ramp:
- No work is planned at this location at this time
Thompson Boat Center Access Road and Parking Area:
Traffic Control/Weekend & Night Work for the Upcoming Week:
Southbound Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway:
At this time all lanes are open to motorists.
A short term lane closure will be utilized periodically between rush-hour periods.
Northbound Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway:
At this time all lanes are open to motorists.
The left lane from Virginia Avenue to the P Street overpass is scheduled to be closed from Saturday, May 10 to Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
After May 13, 2008, a short term lane closure will be utilized periodically between rush-hour periods.
Thompson Boat Center Access Road and Parking Lot:
The Access Road and the parking lot remain open to the public.
‘P’ Street Ramp & Hiker/Biker Trail:
The P Street ramp remains open to motorists in both directions.
At this time the new pedestrian hiker/biker trail is open to pedestrians between Virginia Avenue and the P Street ramp. It is expected to be closed again in the future. A date for when the trail will be closed cannot be given at this time.
General Project Description:
The National Park Service, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration - Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, has started rehabilitation of the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway from Virginia Avenue to P Street, NW and the access road, and parking area of the Thompson Boat Center in Washington, DC. The project consists of milling and overlaying the parkway from Virginia Avenue to P Street and the Thompson Boat Center parking area; realigning the foot and bike trail in this section of the parkway; minor bridge repairs to the L Street Bridge; milling and overlaying ramps to and from K Street and Pennsylvania Avenue; and reconstructing the P Street ramp to and from the southbound Rock Creek Parkway.
Construction began in April 2007, and is expected to be complete by May 2008.
The project will be constructed in four stages. Stage 1 - This stage consists of construction of the west side of the Parkway from Virginia Avenue to P Street except for mill and overlay of the Parkway and ramp terminals, and replacement of street lighting. It also includes all of the work at the Thompson Boat Center parking lot and access road, including street lighting and a concrete overlay on the right southbound lane of L Street Bridge. Only one lane on the Parkway may be closed to traffic at any one time.
At the Thompson Boat Center, the parking lot and the access road shall be constructed in two separate phases. The parking lot shall be constructed one-half at a time to allow parking on the part of the lot not under construction. During this time, access to the parking lot and to the Thompson Boat Center shall be maintained via the existing access road.
The second phase of construction at the Thompson Boat Center (the access road) should occur between November 1 and November 30. During this time, the access road and parking lot will be closed to vehicular traffic. Pedestrian movements shall not be impeded.
Stage 2 - This stage consists of construction of the east side of the Parkway from Virginia Avenue to P Street except for mill and overlay, and replacement of street lighting. It also includes a concrete overlay on the right northbound lane of L Street Bridge. Only one lane on the Parkway may be closed to traffic at any one time.
Stage 3 - This stage consists of construction of new median on the Parkway, drainage systems from Virginia Avenue to K Street ramps, and concrete overlay of the inside lanes of L Street Bridge. The two median lanes of the Parkway may be closed from Virginia Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue
Stage 4 - This stage consists of mill and overlay of the Parkway from Virginia Avenue to P Street and the ramp terminals. It also includes repair of the concrete base and accelerated full-depth patching. This stage will be constructed only during weekends. Two lanes of the Parkway may be closed on weekends only, concurrent with the paving and milling only.
